Managing the Age Group Formation Change in GotSport: What Clubs & Teams Need to Know

Shifting from calendar- year (Jan 1 – Dec 31) to grade-based (Aug 1 – Jul 31) age calculation — effective the 2026-/27 seasonal year

Calendar-Year Birth (Jan 1 – Dec 31)

Grade-Based (Aug 1 – Jul 31)

2026/27 Seasonal Year (begins Aug 1, 2026)

The good news: There is very little clubs or teams need to do to prepare. All of the age-band logic lives on the event side. When a team applies to a 2026/27 event, the platform automatically recognizes the new grade-based age bands and enforces which players can and cannot be added to each team.

What Automatically Happens:

  • When a team applies for a 2026/27 event, the system displays the event age the team will be recognized as for that seasonal year.
  • When players are added to a roster, the system uses the new grade-based age band (Aug 1 – Jul 31) to validate eligibility.
  • Players who are too old for the assigned age band will be blocked from being added — no manual checks required.
  • On Aug 1, 2026 we will update all players to display as their correct school year based age for the 26/27 season and will be updating all team account age bands to reflect the school year based age band

What Teams and Clubs Should Do:

  • Review your event age when applying to 2026/27 events and confirm it is accurate for the group you intend to field.
  • Track which players fall into which age bands under the new Aug 1 cutoff so roster building goes smoothly.
  • Keep your existing team accounts. No migration or recreation is required — continue using the same accounts you use today.
  • Consider updating team names to reflect the two birth years now covered by each age band (e.g., “2013/14 Boys” rather than a single birth year).
  • Do not include the “U##” in your team name. That label changes every year and will require an edit every season — leave it out to save yourself the headache.

Want to Preview Rosters Before 2026/27 Events Go Live?

If your club wants to see what rosters will look like under the new age bands before official 2026/27 events are published, you can build an internal rostering event as a sandbox:

  • Create a private, club-internal event with the Seasonal Year set to 2026/27 and the Age Calculation Method set to Grade-Based.
  • Add your teams and begin rostering players — the system will apply the new age-band logic exactly as it will during the real 2026/27 season.
  • Use the results to preview team compositions, spot players who will move between age groups, and plan ahead for tryouts and communications.

Bottom line: The platform does the heavy lifting. Clubs and teams simply need to review event ages, know their players’ new age bands, and optionally tidy up team names. Everything else is handled by the event settings.
